Microsuction, also known as ear vacuuming is relatively simple, a slender nozzle is inserted gently into the ear so that the excess wax can be siphoned out using a miniature vacuum. Once the wax is dislodged it is removed by either the vacuum itself , a small pair of forceps or a specialised tool known as the ´Jobson Horn’. During this procedure the operator wears magnifying loops to ensure better visualisation while performing the wax removal.
Additional benefits, compared to other methods, due to lack of moisture involved means that microsuction can be performed on people with a history of ear surgery, an outer ear infection or even a ruptured eardrum.
Microsuction may cause some mild side effects :-
minor levels of dizziness, mild discomfort in the ear canal, reduced hearing, increased sensitivity to audio stimulus. Thankfully most of these effects are only temporary and the process should be generally painless.
Water irrigation is the method of ear wax removal mostly used by primary health care facilities - though funding for this service in GP surgeries is slowly being withdrawn.
Based upon traditional ear syringing, water irrigation consists of a jet of water being used to flush wax, debris or foreign bodies out of the ear canal.
Water irrigation aims for a similar conclusion to water syringing but employs a much more controlled manner.
There are times when irrigation isn’t the appropriate method of wax removal for example perforated eardrum, cleft palate, mastoid cavity or grommets in place, microsuction would then be the advisable choice for wax removal.
Ear wax (cerumen) is a naturally occurring substance produced by the ceruminous and sebaceous glands of the outer ear canal. It acts as a protector for the ear canal by lubricating, cleaning and fighting bacteria. Some 2.3 million people in the UK per years are estimated to have ear wax problems.
Any of the following symptoms can be an indicator that there is a build up of wax needing to be removed:-
Do not attempt to manually remove the wax yourself, do not use a cotton bud this will compact the wax even more.
It is always preferable to get advice and treatment from trained healthcare providers.
